Coronavirus: How much should you exercise to protect yourself from COVID-19 infection?

As is known, regular exercise can help prevent bacterial and viral infections, by boosting your immune system.

According to a 2019 research review, moderate-intensity exercise can activate cellular immunity by increasing the circulation of immune cells in the body, helping the body prepare for any future infection.

Similarly, as per a latest study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, that involved a total of 1.8 million people, regular physical activity has been linked to a lower risk of COVID-19 infection and severity. More than half of the total participants were women aged around 53 years old.

It was found people who regularly exercised had an 11% lower risk of COVID-19 infection, and a 44% lower risk of severe disease compared to those who are inactive.

The researchers said, “Our findings highlight the protective effects of engaging in sufficient physical activity as a public health strategy with potential benefits to reduce the risk of severe COVID-19.

“Given the heterogeneity and risk of publication bias, further studies with standardised methodology and outcome reporting are now needed,” they added.
